Articles from French and Belgian Press on Water Situation in Europe

Drinking water quality is a major concern. At DIMM, a water treatment specialist, we know how essential it is to have clean and pure water on a daily basis, to preserve your health and well-being.

Every month, we invite you to our DIMM press review, your new window into the world of water treatment. Behind the statistics and regulations, there are concrete issues that concern us all: drinking water quality, technological innovations, new environmental challenges, and policy decisions in France, Belgium, and Europe. Our mission: to decipher the news for you, highlight key developments, and share the trends shaping the future of water today.

PFAS Pollution in the Ardennes

In the Ardennes, several local officials voluntarily had their blood tested to measure their exposure to PFAS, these chemical substances also called "eternal pollutants". While all expected to find some, the results created a surprise by the extent of concentrations detected.

These particularly high levels highlight the seriousness of pollution already documented in the region, where PFAS are present in water, soil, and the food chain. The affair revives health concerns, because these compounds, used in industry for their non-stick and water-repellent properties, accumulate in the body and are suspected of having harmful health effects (fertility, immunity, cancers).

Officials are now calling for better monitoring, rapid corrective measures, and stricter regulation at the national level. This citizen initiative highlights the urgency of action against silent contamination potentially affecting the entire local population.

When Clouds Poison Rain: Up to 140 Tons of Pesticides Detected Each Year

A Franco-Italian study reveals that approximately 140 tons of pesticides circulate each year in the atmosphere over mainland France. Transported by winds after agricultural use, these substances condense and fall back with rain, contaminating water far beyond treated areas.

In total, 32 molecules have been identified, some of which have been banned for years. In some samples, concentrations even exceeded European thresholds for drinking water, illustrating the seriousness of this invisible pollution.

Researchers warn of the need for increased monitoring, including metabolites of banned pesticides that persist in the environment. These results highlight the urgency of action to protect water resources and public health in the face of diffuse and persistent contamination.
